Marlins Rumors
The Miami Herald is reporting On behalf of the Marlins, I would thank Tiger Woods for happening to have his much-awaited news conference Monday, with an added appreciative nod to Duke and Butler for playing their basketball game later that night. Those things served to perhaps lessen the attention being paid to what the Marlins were doing here, and that's probably a good thing.![]() Si is reporting Three Observations 1. The Marlins are dangerous... ... as they always seem to be. Still, the Fish haven't been to the postseason since 2003, their most recent world championship season. GM Larry Beinfest sees them returning to the promised land with improved starting pitching. "Offensively, we're going to score runs," he says of his club, which won 87 games last year thanks in large part to an offense that ranked in the league's top five in runs scored, team average, and on-base percentage. "The way we're going to get to 90 wins and play in October is with starting pitching. It's an area that let us down a year ago." Beinfest sees ace Josh Johnson having another strong year after going 15-5 with a 3.23 ERA and Ricky Nolasco establishing himself as a frontline starter. "We're relying on them to have a legitimate front end of the rotation," says the GM. "We need Ricky to be who he was over the second half. We need other guys to step forward -- guys like Chris Volstad, Anibal Sanchez, Rick VandenHurk, Sean West. Now they've been in the big leagues a couple years, it's time for them to take the next step." ![]() The Palm Beach Post is reporting The Marlins produced National League rookies of the year with Dontrelle Willis in 2003 and Hanley Ramirez in 2006. Is Chris Coghlan next? "He has proven that he is well-deserving and I hope he wins it,'' teammate Cody Ross said. "He has done an excellent job, not just playing well, but being a catalyst and a leadoff hitter. He gets a lot going for us. There's something to be said for that.'' The Marlins have improved their offer for Nationals first baseman Nick Johnson, offering another minor leaguer in addition to Class AAA right-hander Ryan Tucker, according to a major-league source. Mlb.com is reporting Speculation among players inside the Marlins' clubhouse on Thursday had Adrian Gonzalez possibly coming to Florida as part of a blockbuster trade.By early evening, reports surfaced that the Marlins were pursuing Nick Johnson. The common theme in both possible trade scenarios is the Marlins are looking for a left-handed hitting, strong fielding first baseman. It also didn't go unnoticed that Jorge Cantu was taking ground balls at third base before the Marlins played the Braves on Thursday night. The Marlins are waiting to hear if the Nationals will accept their offer for first baseman Nick Johnson, according to major-league sources. Marlins would love to move Jeremy Hermida. Hermida has yet to have the breakout year Marlins fans have expected, but the potential is still there. Now that the Marlins are desperate for a closer, Hermida becomes prime trade bait.Trading Hermida for a closer and recalling an effective Maybin would essentially be trading for two players. Ken Rosenthal of Fox Sports is reporting that that Marlins are interested in Closer George Sherrill. The O's are reluctant on trading Sherrill. According to the article if the O's were going to trade Sherrill to the Marlins they would want rookie Chris Coghlan in return. The Marlins do not want to trade Coghlan. The Miami Herald is reporting that the Red Sox are interested in moving Brad Penny. The Trade wil only happen if Boston picks up $5 million-plus salary. The Miami Herald is reporting that the Marlins have sent Cameron Maybin to the Minors. Maybin has loosing confindence every and the move to send him to the minors is to regain the confidence that he has lost.
