1. Indians open to moving Lee and Martinez but not at a cheap price

Cleveland.com is reporting that the Indians have Cliff Lee and Victor Martinez on the block. The Indians would want a very steep price for the Pitcher and Catcher/1st baseman. As for trading Lee or Martinez, the Indians would consider it, but the return would have to be staggering. More than anything, it would have to ensure that the Indians would at least be competitive next year.

What team in its right mind would make a deal that not only ruins what remains of this season, but next season as well?

Teams have expressed interest, but nothing has caught Shapiro's fancy.

The Indians hold club options on Lee and Martinez for 2010. Lee's option, fortified by a $1 million bonus for winning the Cy Young last year, is worth $9 million. Pricey, yes, but a deal in a market where a No. 1 starter can command between $12 million and $18 million a year.

    2. Twins trying to sign Dominican Republic shortstop Miquel Sano

Twincities.com is reporting that the Twins are trying to sign 16 year phemon Miquel Sano. There is only one problem, Major League Baseball hasn't yet approved Sano's eligibility or been able to confirm his alleged age of 16. "So it's buyer beware," a top scout said today.

The Twins have been working out and evaluating Sano at their Dominican Republic baseball academy for the last seven months and have a good relationship with him and his family.

    3. Twins and Pirates discussing a trade

Jon Paul Morosi of Fox Sports is reporting that the Twins and Pirates are looking to make a trade. Currently the Twins are intersted in picking up second baseman Freddy Sanchez and relievers Matt Capps and John Grabow. Twins general manager Bill Smith declined to discuss any specific trade targets during a Thursday telephone interview. His team has been on a run recently, winning six of nine games to pull within three of the American League Central-leading Tigers. The teams are set to meet at the Metrodome this weekend. Twins general manager Bill Smith declined to discuss any specific trade targets during a Thursday telephone interview. His team has been on a run recently, winning six of nine games to pull within three of the American League Central-leading Tigers. The teams are set to meet at the Metrodome this weekend. "We're playing a lot better now," Smith said. "We've won four series in a row on the road. Our starting pitching is taking us deeper into games.

"We still need to make this club better, whether that comes from the minor leagues or outside the organization. We're still looking to do that."

    4. Yankees interested in aquiring Arizona reliever Chad Qualls

Fox Sports is reporting that the Yankees are intersted in Chad Qualls. The Yankees' bullpen performed well during their recent seven-game winning streak, which ended Thursday night, but they are keeping a close eye on Arizona reliever Chad Qualls. He has converted 13 of 17 save opportunities this year but blew his latest opportunity Thursday afternoon in Cincinnati.

Brian Bruney has been inconsistent for New York since returning from the disabled list in mid-June; if that trend continues, the team's incentive to acquire Qualls would increase.

    5. D-Backs scouting the Red Sox

Boston.com is reporting that the D-Backs have been scouting the Red Sox. There is speculation that the Red Sox are interested in Corner infielder Chad Tracy. The Arizona Diamondbacks spent a lot of time scouting the Red Sox during the Atlanta and Baltimore series. While it could merely be normal coverage assignments with nothing cooking, the D-Backs might have a player who could be appealing to the Red Sox. Corner infielder Chad Tracy who has just come off the DL with an oblique strain is a chip the Diamondbacks would like to move. While Tracy spent most of his career as a third baseman (330 games) he's become more of a first baseman. His offensive production has declined since a productive early career.
