Ellsbury could be done for the season

Jacoby Ellsbury is scheduled to return to Boston today and could be shut down for the season after his exam in Los Angeles with Dr. Lewis Yo***** revealed a possible rib fracture, according to a source with knowledge of the situation.

Former M's Corey Patterson opts for free agency

Free Agents The Everett Herald is reporting The Seattle Mariners had Corey Patterson(notes) apparently headed to the minors and the 30-year-old outfielder obviously wasn't happy about it because he decided to opt out of his contract and become a free agent, according to the Everett Herald.

Eric Byrnes(notes) appears to have snagged the backup-outfielder role Patterson thought he would fill this season. The problem is that Patterson doesn't have much to sell himself on. Last year, he had a whopping 29 at-bats in the majors: 14 of them with the Milwaukee Brewers and the remaining 15 with the Washington Nationals. Put together he had .103 average with two stolen bases.

Luckily, he had a teensy bit better spring than that, though not by much, batting .216 in 37 at-bats.

He apparently is hoping someone will sign him as a late-inning defensive replacement.
