Ellsbury could be done for the season

Jacoby Ellsbury is scheduled to return to Boston today and could be shut down for the season after his exam in Los Angeles with Dr. Lewis Yo***** revealed a possible rib fracture, according to a source with knowledge of the situation.

 Pirates cut Vazquez

Pirates The Pittsburgh Post Gazette is reporting At 11:35 a.m., the first Pirates player in uniform to take the field was -- who else? -- Jeff Clement, followed closely by Carlos Garcia for yet another round of extra infield. This kid probably sees grounders in his sleep.

Cuts will be announced at around 12:45 p.m. If you want to get them as quickly as possible, follow on my Twitter account. (It's faster that way because I can send from my cell, and I'll be away from the machine.)

UPDATE 11:57 a.m.: Before I head downstairs in a minute, I can tell you that Hayden Penn just went out to the mound in full uniform to work on some things with Joe Kerrigan. You can very safely interpret that to mean Penn made the roster.

12:22 p.m.: The Pirates have removed Ramon Vazquez from the roster, according to three sources just now. Not official from the team yet. And there has not been an indication as to whether it was a designating for assignment or an outright release.

Also, outfielder John Raynor made the team, and first baseman/outfielder Steve Pearce was optioned to Class AAA Indianapolis.

Relievers D.J. Carrasco and Jack Taschner were added to the team and, as non-roster players, had their contracts purchased. Room on the 40-man was created by the release of Vazquez and the disabled list placements of Jose Ascanio (60-day) and Joel Hanrahan (15-day).

Thus, here are your opening-day Pirates ...

Starters: Zach Duke, Ross Ohlendorf, Paul Maholm, Charlie Morton, Daniel McCutchen.

Relievers: Octavio Dotel, Brendan Donnelly, Evan Meek, Javier Lopez, Carrasco, Taschner, Penn.

Catchers: Ryan Doumit, Jason Jaramillo.

Infielders: Jeff Clement, Aki Iwamura, Ronny Cedeno, Andy LaRoche, Bobby Crosby, Delwyn Young.

Outfielders: Lastings Milledge, Andrew McCutchen, Garrett Jones, Ryan Church, Raynor.

1:05 p.m.: A couple more pics, and then I have to go back down for John Russell's session ...
