Feature Article: Baseball Trade Rumors and Notes for July 25th

Rumors     1. Ozzie Guillen keeps eye on price

    2. Francoeur not expected to be traded by Mets

    3. Rushing for Haren could sabotage Yankees' Cliff plan

    4. Red Sox, Yankees inquire about Nunez

    5. Possible White Sox trade bait

    6. What Marlins want for Ross

    7. Why Giants may pass on Guillen

1. Ozzie Guillen keeps eye on price

THe Chicago Sun Times is reporting "Less than a week from now, the questions will all go away. The July 31 trade deadline, the rumors, the speculation and the daily inquiries will all be gone.

More than a few members of the White Sox' traveling party can't wait for that.

Manager Ozzie Guillen had his own take on it Saturday afternoon, letting it be known that general manager Ken Williams has been busy working the phones for the last month, targeting a short list of players, starting with Adam Dunn, but the asking price is not exactly to Guillen's liking.

''To be honest with you, I think all the general managers out there are crazy,'' Guillen said. ''Wow.''

In explaining what the Sox have been trying to get done, as well as the resistance they've come across, Guillen revealed details that were assumed but never confirmed by the organization. Specifically that acquiring a player such as Dunn comes at a heavy price, and it's a price Guillen doesn't want to pay."

    2. Francoeur not expected to be traded by Mets

The New York Daily New is reporting Although a few teams inquired about Jeff Francoeur after reports surfaced that the Mets outfielder would prefer to be moved, all indications are that Francoeur will not be traded.

According to a person familiar with the team's thinking, the Mets are naturally open to dealing Francoeur if a team presents an overwhelming offer, but view him as necessary insurance. The Mets do not want to be without a viable backup if Carlos Beltran, Angel Pagan or Jason Bay were injured.

Francoeur told the Daily News on Thursday that he wants a chance for regular playing time. "If there was an opportunity to play more somewhere else, that would be great," he said. "I love it here, but if they decide to go in a different direction, I would be happy to play somewhere else where there is more playing time.""

    3. Rushing for Haren could sabotage Yankees' Cliff plan

The Ny POst is reporting "The Yankees all but had Cliff Lee on their roster two weeks ago. They are going to make sure they do not do anything to let him slip away again. That is a major reason they are hesitant to obtain Dan Haren from the Diamondbacks.

Now is the moment to stop reading if you believe the Yankees have no payroll guidelines. But if you believe Hal Steinbrenner is going to hold the payroll to about $200 million again in 2011 — and that is how the Yankees' front office is operating — then it will be difficult to obtain Haren and still find the $25 million or so under the seat cushions for Lee. And Lee clearly is the Yankees' top free-agent target of the coming offseason, just like he was earlier this month in the trade market.

How much do the Yankees think of Lee? No disrespect to CC Sabathia, but the Yankees almost certainly would pick Lee over any pitcher in baseball to start a must-win game. Because of that the Yanks were willing to trash their philosophy about not giving up top prospects for a player they would then also have to give a top-of-the-market contract."

    4. Red Sox, Yankees inquire about Nunez

The Miami Herald is reporting The Marlins have received more inquiries about Leo Nunez than any other player ( Red Sox, Yankees, others) but told people they do not want to trade him.

    5. Possible White Sox trade bait

The Chicago Tribune is reporting Triple-A third baseman Brent Morel is likely to be in a big trade if the White Sox make one. The Sox could trade Bobby Jenks for prospects to help facilitate a deal if they decide they have the appetite for Prince Fielder or Adam Dunn

    6. What Marlins want for Ross

the Miami Herald is reporting At Prime 112 on Thursday, Cody Ross paid for -- and sent over -- a drink for Marlins executive Larry Beinfest and delivered a good-natured ``don't trade me'' message. Beinfest then picked up Ross' dinner bill. The Marlins are asking a lot for Ross (quality prospects on the cusp of the majors), two MLB sources said.

    7. Why Giants may pass on Guillen

The Chicago Tribune is reporting The Royals saw Jose Guillen hurt his value when he cost his team a run by not hustling against the Yankees Thursday night. The Giants were scouting Guillen when he failed to get across the plate from second before Wilson Betemit was thrown out trying to stretch a single into a double.
