Padres Rumors
Si is reporting Dominican third base prospect Duanel Jones hasn't had a rollercoaster of an offseason. The 16-year-old had supposedly signed a $1.3 million deal with the San Francisco Giants that the team voided in January because of a failed drug test. Baseball News Share is reporting For the better part of two months, the only thing fans in Boston and San Diego were talking about was whether the two teams were going to work out a deal that would send Padres’ first baseman Adrian Gonzalez to the Red Sox. Hot stove.com is reporting The Padres will likely look to bolster their sub par offense this offseason, writes FanHouse’s Matt Snyder. Adrian Gonzalez has heard rumors about the Red Sox. Kevin Correia’s name has come up in connection with the Milwaukee Brewers. And Heath Bell says he has heard nothing. On the eve of the trading deadline, major league players naturally think about their future – particularly players of value on teams going nowhere like the Padres. Tim Brown of Yahoo sports has done an article on the face of the Padres franchise Adrian Gonzalez. The San Diego Padres were in Anaheim about a month ago, playing lousy, not scoring runs, doing what they could to put up a fight but not making much of it.You know, it’s one thing to be Chase Headley(notes) or Everth Cabrera(notes), who of course yearn to win but at their ages have personal survival to consider, too. It’s quite another to be a veteran and an All-Star who’d experienced the Padres so much better (and not that long ago), who’d left mere survival behind, who couldn’t possibly think any of this is OK, and who is under club control for 2½ more seasons at an extremely club-friendly salary. With some of that in mind, Jeff Moorad, the new CEO and part owner of the Padres, invited Adrian Gonzalez(notes) to lunch. They met in Newport Beach between Padres losses, when the offense was down but slightly better than the nightly no-hit drama it is now. MBL.com is reporting that “Majority owner John Moores is on the verge of selling a one-third interest in the Padres to Jeff Moorad” Moorad has been interested in the team for a long time and has actively been persuing the team for the past 3 months. The announcement of that closing could occur at a media conference as early as Thursday and will come nearly three months after Moorad began the process of purchasing a portion of the team The San Diego Union-Tribune is reporting that the Padres may be forced to look for some outside pitching help. According to MLB.com Padres Reliever Mark Worrell is gone for the Season. Worrell who was just aquired by the Padres, will need elbow-ligament surgery. He is expected to miss the whole 2009 campaign. Whether the Padres can improve upon last year's 63-99 record will hinge in part on whether they get lucky as they scavenge baseball's scrap heaps. Take Duaner Sanchez, the reliever they signed to a minor league contract yesterday. Released by the Mets on March 10, Sanchez “has a pretty good chance” of being with the Padres on Opening Day, General Manager Kevin Towers said.
